1. About Thung Nham Ecotourism Area
Thung Nham Ecotourism Area is located in Hai Nham village, Nam Hoa Lu ward, Ninh Binh province), located entirely in the core area of Trang An scenic spot, next to Tam Coc – Bich Dong tourist area.
With an area of over 300 hectares, Thung Nham Ecotourism Area converges various types of comprehensive tourism such as: mountain climbing tourism, garden tourism, visiting flooded forests, primeval forests, dry caves, and especially visiting bird gardens with a variety of species.
The name Thung Nham originates from the location of the tourist area, which bears the indigenous elements of the Ninh Binh landscape of the North. Thung Nham is also a Sino-Vietnamese word with special meaning. “Thung” is taken from the idea of a valley, which is a low-lying area surrounded by mountains, while “Nham” means high, rugged mountains and steep cliffs. Thung Nham is understood as a valley surrounded by many steep cliffs, a harmonious combination of the majesty and poetry of nature.
2. Means of transport to Thung Nham
- Traveling by motorbike: If you are a person who likes to travel, enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way to Thung Nham and want to be proactive with your time and places to visit, you can go by motorbike. From the center of Ninh Binh city, go about 4km more to reach Vom bridge, continue to go another 8km to Tam Coc. Here will be a three-way intersection near Bich Dong pagoda, you continue to turn left following the sign and go straight to Thung Nham eco-tourism area.
- If you are a person who likes safety, speed and economy, then the bus is the best choice for you. When arriving in Hanoi, you can go to Bat Giap or My Dinh bus station to buy tickets for about 70,000 VND – 100,000 VND/ticket/person and after about 2 hours you will be in Ninh Binh. Here, you can rent a taxi or continue to take a bus to reach Thung Nham eco-tourism area. Or take Khanh An limousine to pick up and drop off at 19008629.

4.1. Bird Garden

4.2. Vai Gioi Cave
Vai Gioi Cave was once the place where the people of Hoa Lu capital set up an altar to worship the sky and pray for favorable weather. Today, this place is known as a paradise where “hell – earth – paradise” converge in the ancient capital. To climb to the cave, you have to climb 439 stone steps. From the top door of the cave, you can observe the entire scene of Thung Nham mountain forest with overlapping mountain ranges, the entrance point is the stilt houses creating a beautiful and vivid picture.
Here is a little tip for you: Vai Gioi Cave is about 200m from ticket check point number 1. You can enter gate number 2 to visit the places and then return to Vai Gioi Cave in the cool afternoon or early in the morning to save energy. You should bring drinking water when climbing the cave and wear sneakers. Visitors with cardiovascular disease, low blood pressure, etc. are advised not to climb Vai Gioi Cave.
Vai Gioi Cave is about 5,000 square meters wide with 3 floors containing many stalactites with shapes symbolizing nirvana, bodhisattva, and heaven.

But Cave is a 500m long water cave, the ceiling of the cave is 40 meters high at the highest point and 30 meters wide at the widest point, leading from Thung Nham to Thien Ha Cave, connecting Hoa Lu and Nho Quan districts. But Cave is located under the blue water and is associated with ancient legends. To visit But Cave, you must take a boat on the Ben Dang River with its emerald green water. But Cave is completely a natural cave, with a system of stalactites and stalagmites developing in many different shapes: the image of Buddha, a dragon silk strip, a lying fairy, a peach, a trellis of morning glory, a sea snail, a whale, etc. In the cave, there are many different forms of stalagmites and stalactites (stalactites, stalagmites, living stalagmites, dead stalagmites).
4.4. Mermaid Cave
To explore this cave, you will walk on a winding bridge inside the mountain. Mermaid Cave is considered one of the most beautiful water caves in Thung Nham. In some sections, the stalactites are so large that visitors have to wriggle or lean to get through. It is recommended that the elderly, children, and those with back pain can skip this to explore other spots.
4.5. Spiritual worship cluster
Not only is it an attractive eco-tourism destination, Thung Nham is also known for its works of cultural, historical and religious value. The spiritual worship cluster includes Goi Dai Temple, the moving banyan tree and Linh Than Temple.
Located at the top of the hill, Goi Dai Temple was built in the popular Dinh-shaped architecture. The communal house yard has a stone stele decorated with embossed dragon details and two extremely vivid Tiger-Plumbing screens. The back of the temple worships the Three Holy Mothers, including: the First Mother of the Upper Heaven (ruling the sky), the Second Mother of the Upper Thoi (ruling the mountains and forests) and the Third Mother of the Water Palace (ruling the rivers and waters). The outer altar worships the Five Immortals and the Three Kings. The right wing worships Duc Thanh Viet Vuong, the left wing worships Ba Chua Ban Den (the ruler of the sacred temple). In addition, on the right side of the temple is “Dong Son Trang” worshiping Ba Chua Son Trang and 12 holy ladies. The temple’s special feature lies in the diverse combination of many cultural beliefs: from Mother worship to God worship.
The sacred temple is associated with the story of the talented general – Duc Thanh Viet Vuong, who helped King Dinh Bo Linh suppress the rebellion of 12 warlords. After completing his “mission”, he volunteered to return to his homeland to guard the land west of the capital Hoa Lu and lived in seclusion until his death. Touched by his simple lifestyle and merit, King Dinh built a temple right under the banyan tree. No one knows since when the giant roots of the banyan tree seem to “embrace” the temple instead of moving towards the lake. This makes the temple even more mysterious and sacred.
The moving banyan tree is one of the unique highlights of the spiritual worship cluster. Scientists have researched that the banyan tree in Thung Nham is over 1000 years old and has gone through 3 steps of movement. The tree is currently at the end of step 3 and the beginning of step 4. This is also the reason why the tree is called “The Moving Banyan Tree”.

The flower island with a total area of about 800m2 is divided into 6 floors, each floor grows a different type of flower, with a variety of colors competing to show off their beauty under the sun, bringing visitors more experiences.
